My main role at Magicalia Ltd was to run thinkcamera.com – “the UK’s number one online resource for Digital Cameras and Photography”.
When I joined, ThinkCamera was a shell of a site, and it was my job to get it running, and commercially viable in terms of selling advertising. Over the fourteen months I worked on it, I got the site to 1million unique visitors total, was acting-Editor until we hired a fulltime editor (I was involved in the hiring process too), wrote reviews and news articles, Search Engine Optimisation, ran competitions, set up a 2,000 item product database with full information for each and designed animated .gif and Flash ads for it, and other sites in the Magicalia online stable.
The overall design itself is not mine, the design was already there as a testbed by the company designer to switch the website template for the rest of the sites, and control over CSS was very limited due to the CMS, meaning I had to put inline CSS and javascript in. One failure of mine on the site was the Forum – despite trying to get a community going by myself, it still hasn’t really taken off.
The screenshot below is not exactly how I left it, although the layout hasn’t changed very much since I left. Visit http://www.thinkcamera.com to see it live.
